Your questions answered

No. The IELTS Preparation course is for learners at CEFR B1 (intermediate) or above, up to C1, because the classes focus on exam strategy and timed practice rather than basic English. If you are a beginner, start with our Essential English course (A1 to C2) and move on to IELTS preparation once you reach B1. Take the free 5-minute level test to see where you are now.
All classes are live and interactive on the Kensington English Portal with a qualified teacher — there are no pre-recorded videos. You get 6 hours of live tuition a week in a group of no more than 15 students, with personalised feedback on your work. Course materials are provided digitally through the student portal.
Lessons are scheduled in London (UK) time, and students join from anywhere in the world. The course runs 6 hours a week in structured sessions across the week, so convert the London session times to your local time zone. Email admin@kensingtonenglish.co.uk to confirm the current session times before you enrol.
Yes. Students who complete the 12-week course receive the Kensington English Recognised Certificate of completion. Please note that the free level test is a placement guide only — it does not come with a certificate.
Take our free online level test: it takes about 5 minutes and gives you an instant CEFR estimate with a course recommendation. You need at least B1 for this course. Before the course begins, your teacher will also give you a realistic target band based on your starting point.
Your achievable band score depends on your current level, how much time you dedicate to self-study, and how diligently you apply the strategies we teach. Our students see an average improvement of +1.4 bands across the programme. During your free level assessment before the course begins, your teacher will give you a realistic target based on your starting point. If your goal requires a score that is significantly beyond your current level, we will tell you honestly — and may recommend additional preparation first.
No. Many of our students come to us before they have ever sat IELTS. What you do need is a minimum English level of B1 (intermediate) — this ensures you can engage fully with the programme and make the most of the 12 weeks. If you are unsure of your level, take our free online level test before applying.
Yes. All course materials — practice papers, strategy guides, writing templates, vocabulary lists, and mock test resources — are included in the course fee. You will not need to purchase any additional textbooks or resources. Everything is provided digitally through our student portal, which you will have access to from day one.
IELTS Academic is required for most university admissions and professional registration (for example, with the GMC or NMC). IELTS General Training is used primarily for work experience, training programmes, and immigration to English-speaking countries. The Listening and Speaking papers are identical in both versions. The Reading and Writing papers differ in content and style. Our programme covers both pathways — you will confirm which version you are taking during enrolment, and your teacher will tailor practice accordingly.
