How the full mock test works

The papers follow the same order as test day. On the real test, Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting with no breaks, and Speaking is a separate appointment.

  1. Listening (about 30 minutes): four recordings, 40 questions, British English voices.
  2. Reading (60 minutes): three Academic passages, 40 questions.
  3. Writing (60 minutes): Task 1 chart report and Task 2 essay.
  4. Speaking (11–14 minutes): a recorded examiner asks Part 1, 2 and 3 questions.

You can take all four in one go, like a real test day, or one at a time: your scorecard is saved in this browser.

How your overall band is worked out

Each paper gets a band from 0 to 9. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band: an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0 and 6.1 becomes 6.0.

Listening and Reading are marked automatically from your answers. Writing and Speaking bands come from our AI marker (for learners aged 18 and over). All the bands are indicative practice bands, not official IELTS scores, but they give you a realistic idea of where you are and which paper needs the most work.

Frequently asked questions

Is this IELTS mock test really free?

Yes. All four papers, the marking and the AI bands are free. You give your first name and email address to see each result, and we email you a copy.

Is it the same as the real IELTS test?

It follows the real format and timing for all four papers, and was written by our teachers. It is not an official IELTS test, and the bands are indicative.

Academic or General Training?

This mock test is Academic. Listening and Speaking are the same for both; the Reading and Writing papers here are the Academic versions.

Do I have to do all four papers at once?

No. You can take them one at a time and come back later; your scorecard is saved in this browser.

Ready to move your band up?

Our live online IELTS classes cover all four papers, with timed practice and personalised feedback on your Writing and Speaking.
