Weather is the one thing in aviation that never reads from a script. A clear morning turns to fog by the time you taxi; a calm approach meets a gust nobody promised. Pilots and cabin crew who handle weather well in English aren't the ones with the biggest vocabulary — they're the ones who can read a forecast quickly, say what they see plainly, and never freeze when a controller throws an unfamiliar word at them. If weather reports still look like a wall of letters and numbers to you, this is where they start to make sense.
Start With the METAR
A METAR is the routine weather report for an airport, issued roughly every hour, and it's where most aviation weather English lives. It looks intimidating because it's compressed into codes — EGLL 191020Z 24008KT 9999 FEW035 18/12 Q1018 — but every block follows the same order, every time: station, time, wind, visibility, cloud, temperature, pressure. Once you know the order, you're not solving a puzzle; you're reading a sentence with the spaces removed. Read ten of them aloud and the pattern stops feeling foreign.
Crack the Codes One Block at a Time
Take that example apart. EGLL is Heathrow. 191020Z is the 19th at 1020 Zulu — aviation runs on UTC, never local time. 24008KT means wind from 240 degrees at 8 knots. 9999 is visibility of 10 km or more. FEW035 is few clouds at 3,500 feet. 18/12 is temperature 18, dew point 12. Q1018 is the pressure setting. The codes that catch learners out are the cloud amounts — FEW, SCT (scattered), BKN (broken), OVC (overcast) — and the weather abbreviations: RA for rain, SN for snow, BR for mist, FG for fog, TS for thunderstorm. A minus sign means light, a plus sign means heavy. Learn that handful and most reports open up.
Say It Out Loud, Not Just Read It
Reading a METAR silently is only half the skill. The other half is turning it into clear spoken English — for a briefing, a passenger announcement, or a readback to ATC. "Wind two four zero, eight knots" is how 24008KT sounds on frequency; numbers go digit by digit, and "knots" gets said, not skipped. When you brief colleagues or reassure passengers, you switch registers entirely: "There's some low cloud and light rain at our destination, so expect a smoother descent once we're through it." Same weather, different audience. Practise both versions — the precise radio one and the plain-English passenger one — because a single shift will ask you to move between them.
The Words That Actually Trip People Up
It's rarely the technical codes that cause trouble — it's ordinary weather vocabulary used precisely. "Gusting" isn't the same as "strong"; a gust is a sudden, brief increase in wind. Turbulence gets described as light, moderate, or severe, and the wrong choice changes how seriously people take it. "Visibility is deteriorating" means it's getting worse; "conditions are improving" means the opposite. Mixing up "overcast" with "cloudy", or a "shower" (brief) with "rain" (steady), quietly changes what a colleague expects to happen. Build a short list of these pairs and drill the difference, because that precision is the whole point of aviation English.
Weather English rewards repetition far more than talent. Read a real METAR every morning, say it aloud, then describe the same conditions twice more — once as a crew briefing, once as a calm word to passengers.
